A Normal Day That Turned Into a Nightmare

What was supposed to be an ordinary Thursday afternoon has now turned into every parent’s worst nightmare.
Zanele Mchunu, a vibrant young schoolgirl from Elandskop near KwaMahlahla Hole, Mpangeleni in Pietermaritzburg, vanished without a trace on Thursday, 17 April 2025.
According to her family, Zanele told them she was going to the store — something she had done many times before. But that Thursday, she never returned home.
“She just left in her usual clothes — black shorts and a brown and caramel jersey. We never imagined that would be the last time we’d see her,” said a heartbroken family member.
Community on Edge: “We’ve Looked Everywhere”
The local community has since launched a desperate search, combing through friends’ homes, nearby stores, open fields, and even calling in favors to get help — but there’s still no sign of Zanele.
“She’s a student at Langalakhe High School, a well-known learner,” shared a concerned neighbor.
“We’ve asked all her classmates, friends, even distant relatives. Nothing. No one has seen or heard from her. It’s like she just disappeared.”
Why Every Minute Counts in Missing Person Cases
Experts say the first 48 hours after a disappearance are the most crucial.
According to Missing Children South Africa, one child goes missing every five hours in South Africa, and only 77% are eventually found. That means almost a quarter never return home. These numbers are terrifying — and they make it even more urgent to spread the word about Zanele.
