Last Moments: What Happened to Mojalefa?

Mojalefa, a toddler with autism, vanished on Sunday afternoon, 27 April 2025, after he was seen playing at a local field near his home. Despite emotional pleas from his mother and a growing social media campaign, the little boy remained missing for days until his body was discovered in a nearby stream.

“He was such a joyful child… he couldn’t even speak properly. How could this happen to him?” said his devastated aunt.

Community Outrage: “The Police Failed us”

The discovery has sparked outrage across Roodepoort, with angry residents accusing authorities of moving too slowly in their response.

“If the police had acted faster, maybe we wouldn’t be here,” one resident told reporters. “We searched day and night while they dragged their feet.”

A local community leader echoed the sentiment, saying, “This is not just about him. It’s about every child who goes missing and doesn’t get the attention they deserve.”

According to Missing Children South Africa, a child goes missing every five hours in the country. While many are found, others—like Mojalefa—end in tragedy. The organization emphasizes that early response and public awareness are key to increasing recovery rates.

Yet in Mojalefa’s case, many believe these crucial hours were wasted.

As police continue their investigation, the community is calling for a full inquiry into the handling of his case. Social media is flooded with messages of support under the trending hashtag #JusticeForMojalefa.

Local churches and organizations are planning candlelight vigils, and petitions are circulating demanding a review of SAPS’ response protocols for missing children, especially those with special needs.

At just three years old, Mojalefa had his whole life ahead of him. His favorite toy was a plastic truck. He loved running barefoot in the yard. He was autistic, but his diagnosis never defined him.

His mother’s pain is unimaginable. “I just wanted him home. I didn’t care how—just alive.”

What Can We Do?

Mojalefa’s death is not just a tragedy—it’s a call to action. A call to hold authorities accountable. A call to treat every missing child with urgency. And a call to build safer communities for all our children.

👉 Will Mojalefa’s story be the one that finally brings change? Or will he be just another name lost in the system?
