A Morning That Nearly Turned Tragic
Two women from KwaShoba in Ezingolweni are recovering from a terrifying encounter this morning after narrowly escaping what appears to have been a well-planned kidnapping attempt disguised as a job offer.
The suspect, described as a foreign national with dreadlocks, was driving a white Toyota Corolla with Gauteng number plates (KJ 89 JV GP) when he approached one of the women, claiming to work with the Department of Transport on a local road construction project. With roadworks visibly underway in the area, the story felt believable—until everything took a dark turn.

The Promise of Work That Turned into a Nightmare
According to the woman, the kidnapper confidently explained that he was urgently looking for two laborers because his workers had failed to show up. He claimed the local chief (induna) was supposed to notify residents about the job opportunity.
One of the women, in good faith, offered to fetch another woman to join her. Once inside the vehicle, the man said they needed to pass through eMdlazi, a nearby area, to see a “client” before heading to the construction site.
But within minutes of departure, both women began feeling lightheaded.
“We felt dizzy, like something was coming out of the aircon,” one of the survivors shared in an interview. “The air inside the car felt toxic. We could barely breathe properly.”
Inside the vehicle, the women noticed disturbing signs—a pair of scissors, and a sangoma cloth wrapped around the seats, which deepened their alarm.
As the car approached eZakheni in Ezingolweni, the women mustered their courage and began banging on the windows, screaming for help. With quick thinking and desperation fuelling them, they jumped out of the moving vehicle, sustaining minor injuries but ultimately saving their lives.

Police Called for Statements—Public Urged to Stay Alert
Local SAPS officers contacted the women shortly after the incident to take official statements. While no arrests have yet been made, there have been multiple reports involving this vehicle.
What’s troubling is how the suspect appeared to know intricate details about the area, including the names of rural communities and the ongoing road construction. Authorities are now investigating whether he may be working with local accomplices.
“This is not just a random predator,” said a concerned community leader in KwaMachi. “This person seems to have insider knowledge of our villages. We urge every resident to be vigilant and report any suspicious vehicles immediately.”

Connections to Other Alarming Incidents
The incident comes just days after a viral post about a woman in Durban who was allegedly injected and kidnapped by a Nigerian man, later found dead with missing body parts. While that case remains under investigation, with the suspects still at large, the similarity in methods and suspect profiles is raising serious alarm.
How Safe Are Our Rural Roads?
According to 2023 statistics from the South African Police Service (SAPS), over 1,000 kidnapping cases were reported in KwaZulu-Natal alone last year. Alarmingly, many involve deception tactics, especially in underdeveloped areas where job scarcity makes residents vulnerable.
What Can We Learn From This Incident?
This attempted kidnapping is a chilling reminder of how easily desperation and hope can be manipulated. It also reminds us of the power of quick thinking and bravery—two women who could’ve become statistics, instead, are now survivors and community heroes.
Reflective Question:
How can communities build stronger support systems to protect each other from such manipulative dangers?
