Motherwell, Eastern Cape – The search for missing 12-year-old Lithaliyanda Ntoni came to a heartbreaking end in the early hours of 27 June 2025, when her body was discovered in bushes near Khabonqaba Street, NU6, Motherwell.
Lithaliyanda had been reported missing on 24 June 2025 after she left her home on Luzipho Street, NU10, to go to a nearby shop and never returned. Her disappearance sparked urgent community concern and a wide-reaching search effort.
At approximately 02:10 am on Friday, police recovered her lifeless body in a bushy area not far from her home. The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that a 39-year-old male suspect has been arrested and charged with kidnapping and murder.
“While we commend the swift arrest in this case, the brutal nature of this child’s murder has deeply shocked our officers and the community,” said Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, Acting Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape.
“We have full confidence in our investigative team and the National Prosecuting Authority to ensure justice for Lithaliyanda and her family.”
Community in Mourning
The Motherwell community has been left shaken by the news of Lithaliyanda’s death. She was described by locals as a bright and well-mannered child who was simply running a small errand on the day she went missing.
Her tragic death has once again raised urgent concerns about the safety of children in South African communities, especially young girls who continue to fall victim to violent crimes.

Justice and Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have not released the identity of the suspect at this stage, but confirmed that he is in custody and expected to appear in court soon. Investigations are ongoing, and police are urging the public to come forward with any additional information that could strengthen the case.
Community leaders have called for a collective stand against crimes targeting women and children.
