Two occupants escaped unharmed after gunmen ambushed an e-hailing vehicle on the Ndwedwe Main Road near Sebenzele High School in Ndwedwe, KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday night, 23 June 2026.
The vehicle was reportedly travelling from Hazelmere to Mona when it came under heavy gunfire in what appears to have been a coordinated attack. Despite the extensive damage caused by the shooting, neither of the occupants suffered injuries.
What Happened During the Ndwedwe E-Hailing Vehicle Shooting
According to information gathered at the scene, the occupants were travelling in a white Toyota Rumion that was being used as an e-hailing vehicle when they noticed a Hyundai SUV following them.
The SUV was allegedly first seen behind the vehicle near a tuckshop in the Pholopholo area. As the journey continued along the Ndwedwe Main Road, the situation escalated when multiple shots were fired at the Toyota Rumion.
Preliminary information indicates that the attack may have involved several suspects operating from different positions. It is alleged that one suspect armed with a rifle had concealed himself in dense vegetation alongside the roadway, while occupants of the SUV simultaneously opened fire with handguns.
The shooting left the Toyota Rumion heavily damaged. Several parts of the vehicle were struck by bullets, including the windscreen, doors, bonnet, boot, and tyres.
The attack unfolded late at night, creating a dangerous situation for the occupants and highlighting ongoing concerns about violent crime affecting motorists on some KwaZulu-Natal roads.

Extent of the Damage Caused by the Gunfire Attack
The Toyota Rumion sustained extensive damage during the ambush.
Information from the scene suggests that numerous rounds were fired at the vehicle. The damage was severe enough to destroy one of the tyres, eventually causing the vehicle to become immobilised.
Photographs from the scene showed multiple bullet impacts across different sections of the vehicle. Damage to the windscreen and body panels illustrated the intensity of the attack.
Despite the extent of the gunfire, the occupants were able to avoid physical injury. According to the information provided, they remained inside the vehicle throughout the ordeal.
The fact that neither person was wounded has been described as remarkable considering the amount of damage sustained by the vehicle. Incidents involving firearms often result in serious injuries or fatalities, making this outcome particularly unusual.
The incident also raises concerns about the risks faced by e-hailing drivers and passengers who frequently travel long distances, including late-night routes through rural and semi-rural areas.

Why the Ndwedwe Shooting Raises Public Safety Concerns
The attack has raised questions about road safety and criminal activity in the area.
Motorists rely on public roads to travel safely between communities, and incidents involving heavily armed suspects can have a significant impact on public confidence. In this case, the alleged use of multiple firearms, including a rifle, has added to concerns surrounding the seriousness of the attack.
The incident occurred near Sebenzele High School along a route used by residents travelling between various communities in the Ndwedwe area. While the shooting took place late at night, such incidents often leave communities concerned about safety and security.
Violent attacks targeting vehicles can also have wider implications for transport services. E-hailing operators and drivers depend on safe road networks to conduct their work, while passengers rely on these services for daily travel.
Although no injuries were reported in this case, the attack serves as a reminder of the dangers that can arise when armed suspects target moving vehicles.
Authorities will likely seek to determine whether the occupants were specifically targeted or whether other circumstances may have contributed to the incident.
