A 26-year-old suspect has been arrested and charged with two counts of murder following the deaths of brothers Reanetswe Lakaje (9) and Thabiso Lakaje (14) at Toekoms Farm outside Harrismith in the Free State. Police confirmed the suspect was arrested on Thursday, 25 June 2026, and is expected to appear before the Harrismith Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 29 June 2026.

According to police, brothers Reanetswe Lakaje, aged nine, and Thabiso Lakaje, aged 14, were allegedly attacked and severely assaulted by a known suspect for reasons that have not yet been established.
A security guard discovered the boys near the entrance of their home and immediately alerted the farm manager after noticing that both children had their hands and mouths fastened with cloth.
Thabiso Lakaje was declared dead at the scene. Reanetswe Lakaje was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment but later died from his injuries.
Police also confirmed that the boys’ mother was at work when the incident took place and was informed afterwards.
Investigators have not disclosed a motive, and the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack remain under investigation.
