The identification brought an end to the family’s search, but also confirmed their worst fears.

Simphiwe had left home at about 7pm on Friday after telling her mother that she was going to check on someone at a tavern opposite the gate of the property where the family was staying. She did not return.

Her family initially believed she might have gone out with friends because it was the weekend. Concern grew when she remained missing, and the disappearance was reported to Kagiso police.

The family is now mourning the loss of a young woman who would have turned 23 in October.
