A wave of sorrow and outrage swept through Bloemfontein as mourners gathered to bid farewell to Olorato Mongale, the young woman whose life was cut short in a horrifying crime that has gripped the nation. Her memorial service, held with heavy hearts, marked the end of a life full of promise, tragically stolen under the pretense of romance.
Olorato’s body was discovered last week in Lombardy West, near Alexandra in northern Johannesburg, just hours after she was picked up for what was supposed to be a date. What followed has shaken communities across the country.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) is now investigating what they believe is a larger criminal syndicate that uses malls and dating platforms to target and rob women. Police suspect that Olorato’s murder is not an isolated case but part of a disturbing trend involving well-organized criminals, some of whom are believed to have traveled all the way from KwaZulu-Natal.
“I don’t think they came from KZN without a purpose,” said one mourner during the service in bloemfontein. “There had to be a reason, and that reason ended with Olorato losing her life.”
During the emotional memorial, family friend Sinki Leshabane shared cherished memories of Olorato, affectionately describing her as the “life of the party” and a source of joy at family gatherings.
“She was the heart of Pops’ events,” said Leshabane. “Olorato always had the mic, always brought the energy. She was teaching our kids the latest dances, helping them stay on trend. Losing her is like losing a light in our lives.”
Authorities are continuing their manhunt for three suspects believed to be involved in Olorato’s murder, including a third man recently added to the #wanted list. The father of one of the suspects, believed to own the getaway vehicle, has already been taken into custody.
As the community lays Olorato to rest, the nation is left with chilling questions: How many more women have fallen victim to this cruel scheme? How many more lives will be lost before justice is served?
