The Car App That Could’ve Spotted the Danger Olorato Missed (1)

“If Only There Was an App”: How Olorato’s Murder Sparks a Cry for Public Access to Vehicle Verification Tools

“She did everything right… but maybe, just maybe, an app could have saved her life.”

The heartbreaking story of 30-year-old Olorato Mongale, a Wits University student who went missing after a first date, continues to shake the nation. But now, a powerful new voice has entered the conversation — someone who narrowly escaped a similar fate.

In response to Olorato’s story, one woman shared her terrifying experience in the comments section. She recalls following her gut instinct when something didn’t feel right before a date:

“The guy used a fake number plate. I took a photo and sent it to my police friend, who immediately confirmed the details. That disturbed their whole plan.”

Her story is a sobering reminder that intuition, quick thinking, and technology can be the thin line between safety and tragedy.

But her comment didn’t stop there.

📲 “We Need an App – And We Need It Now”

This survivor proposes a life-saving idea that is now gaining traction online: a mobile app that allows the public to verify vehicle ownership instantly.

“If there was an app like that, Olorato would’ve known something was very wrong… The number plate didn’t even match the car. She would’ve never gotten in that Polo.”

In Olorato’s case, she had alerted her friends and agreed to send location updates — even warning that if she didn’t check in after an hour, they should start looking for her. She took precautions. She trusted someone. And still, she vanished — her body later found discarded like trash.

While a vehicle verification app might not legally provide access to an owner’s full personal information, it could still offer critical safety data — such as whether the number plate matches the car’s make, model, and color. That alone could raise enough red flags to stop someone from getting into the wrong vehicle. In Olorato’s case, the number plate reportedly didn’t match the Polo she was picked up in — a detail that a verification app could have immediately flagged. Sometimes, a simple mismatch is all it takes to prevent a tragedy.

The VW Polo used in Olorato’s abduction was recently seized by SAPS at a panel beater workshop in Phoenix, Durban. Blood traces were found inside. An elderly man, believed to be the owner, was arrested. But the two main suspects — Fezile Ngubane and Philangenkosi Sibongokuhle Makhanya — remain on the run.

SAPS urges the public to help identify and locate these suspects. Their photos have been widely distributed, and police are warning citizens: do not approach them — call authorities immediately.

This tragedy has now opened a critical conversation: Why isn’t vehicle data more accessible to the public?

Imagine being able to:

  • Instantly verify a car’s ownership before a date or ride-share
  • Get alerts if a plate doesn’t match the vehicle
  • Share data in real time with loved ones and law enforcement

It’s the kind of app Olorato — and countless others — might have used.
