Olorato Mongale, a 30-year-old journalism graduate from Rhodes University, was pursuing her postgraduate studies at the University of the Witwatersrand. Known for her passion and dedication, she had a promising future ahead of her. On Sunday, May 25, 2025, she went on a date with a man she had recently met, known only as “John.” CCTV footage later revealed her leaving a location in Sandton, Johannesburg, and entering a white Volkswagen Polo with cloned license plates.

The Discovery and Initial Investigation
Tragically, Olorato’s body was discovered the same day on a road in Lombardy West, Johannesburg. The news sent shockwaves through the community, prompting immediate action from law enforcement. A multidisciplinary team, including the SAPS Anti-Kidnapping Task Team, was assembled to investigate the case.
Their efforts led them to a lodge in Kew, where two suspects had booked a room but did not sleep there. Further intelligence guided them to KwaMashu, Durban, and eventually to a panel-beating workshop in Phoenix, where the white VW Polo was found with traces of blood inside.

The Suspects: A Closer Look
Philangenkosi Makhanya, identified as the main suspect, was tracked to a residential complex in Amanzimtoti. When confronted by police, he opened fire, leading to a shootout in which he was fatally shot .
Fezile Ngubane, another suspect, surrendered to the KwaMashu police station shortly after Makhanya’s death . A third suspect, Bongani Mthimkhulu, remains at large. Police have urged him to turn himself in and have warned the public not to approach him, as he is considered dangerous .

Olorato’s murder has reignited discussions about gender-based violence in South Africa. Between January and March 2025, 137 women were murdered, and over 1,000 were raped, highlighting the severity of the issue .
