The family of Gabriel Toyana says they have located his body at the Hillbrow mortuary in Johannesburg. Toyana, who was reported missing in February after disappearing from Kensington B in Gauteng, was identified by relatives on Thursday.
The family told reporters they are still waiting for a formal report from authorities. They say they were informed that he may have been poisoned, although official confirmation has not yet been released.
Police have not yet issued a detailed statement regarding the circumstances surrounding his death.
Missing Person Case in Gauteng Ends in Tragic Discovery
Toyana, 45, had been missing since 12 February 2026. According to the initial missing person report, he was last seen at around 18:00 in Kensington B before later being spotted at Multichoice at approximately 20:00 the same evening.
After that sighting, there were no confirmed reports of his movements. A missing person case was opened at Linden SAPS under OB number 1803/02/2026.
Family members and community groups had been widely sharing his details on social media in the hope that someone would recognise him and provide information.

Family Confirms Identification at Hillbrow Mortuary
Relatives say they located Toyana at the Hillbrow mortuary after making inquiries during the ongoing search.
A family member said they are still waiting for official documentation and a post-mortem report that will clarify the exact cause of death.
“At this stage, we are waiting for the formal report tomorrow,” a relative explained. “We were told he was apparently poisoned, but we are waiting for the official confirmation.”
The family has asked for privacy as they process the loss and prepare for the next steps.
Police Investigation Expected to Clarify Cause of Death for Gabriel Toyana
Authorities are expected to release further information once official medical and investigative reports are completed.
In cases where poisoning is suspected, forensic examinations are usually conducted to determine the substance involved and whether foul play may have occurred.
Investigators may also examine Toyana’s last known movements, speak to potential witnesses, and review any available surveillance footage from areas where he was last seen.
These steps are standard procedure in cases involving unexplained deaths.
