Johannesburg, Gauteng – The mysterious disappearance of 25-year-old Thabang Kubu has taken a chilling turn, leaving his family devastated and desperate for answers. After months of uncertainty, alarming details have emerged, raising unsettling questions about the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.
Thabang’s Friend’s Offer That Turned Into a Nightmare
According to Derrick Kubu, Thabang’s brother, the ordeal began when a close friend visited their home in Polokwane. The friend, who resides full-time in Brixton, Johannesburg, convinced Thabang to relocate to Gauteng for a promising job opportunity. Offering free transport, accommodation, and employment, the friend’s offer seemed like a lifeline.
But days later, that lifeline was shattered.

Thabang Kubu’s Disappearance and the Suspicious Behavior That Followed
Derrick was in constant communication with Thabang, who reassured him that everything was going well at that time. Then, the unimaginable happened. The same friend who had taken Thabang to Johannesburg returned alone, delivering devastating news — Thabang was missing.
“When we questioned him about the circumstances, he gave conflicting statements,” Derrick said. “First, he claimed he was in Durban when Thabang disappeared, then the story changed. Even at the police station, he altered his story two to three times.”
A Job Offer That Didn’t Make Sense

Further adding to the confusion, Derrick revealed that Thabang was supposedly offered a job in the security industry. However, he had no qualifications or training in the field. The circumstances around how he was employed remain questionable.
“How could someone without any security training suddenly get a job in this sector? None of it adds up,” Derrick said. “It’s as if he was lured under false pretenses.”
How did an unqualified individual get a security job? Who facilitated this offer, and why? These are critical questions that remain unanswered.
A Failed Investigation and Delayed Justice
Despite the glaring inconsistencies, SAPS Brixton has made little progress. The investigators reportedly told the family, “Don’t worry, he’s a young man; we are investigating,” yet months have passed with no answers.
Even more concerning is the handling of Thabang’s phone records. While the investigators confirmed his last call traced to Pretoria’s Paul Kruger Street, further investigation hit a dead end. The person Thabang called allegedly dropped the call when the police attempted contact. Attempts to track the number through FICA led them to an elderly woman in Mokopane, who claimed the number was reassigned long ago.
Why has it taken months to pursue basic leads like phone records? Is this delay compromising the search for Thabang?
Suspicious Financial Transactions on Thabangs Bank Account
The case took another disturbing turn when the friend admitted to using Thabang’s bank account. He insisted a tenant paid R1,000 into Thabang’s account for rent, but bank statements contradicted his claims. The money appeared to come from a company rather than an individual.
“Why would a company pay money on behalf of a tenant? The story doesn’t add up,” Derrick questioned. “It’s like he’s trying to create a narrative that Thabang ran away with his R1000.”
The financial trail presents another opportunity for investigators to find out what truly happened. Will this lead be pursued further?
A Fading Hope?
The investigating officer has since become unreachable. Calls are unanswered, our messages are ignored. The Kubu family fears that the investigation is slipping into the shadows, destined to become yet another cold case.
