A tight-knit community in Booysens Park, Bethelsdorp, has been plunged into fear and heartbreak after the sudden disappearance of 11-year-old Jaquin Assam, who vanished without a trace on Saturday, 28 June 2025.
The young boy, described as playful and energetic, reportedly asked his guardian that morning if he could travel to Central to visit his mother. The request was denied – a decision that now haunts the family. Later that day, Jaquin told his guardian that he was heading out to play with friends. That was the last time anyone saw him.
Since that moment, the family’s world has been turned upside down. Days passed with no sign of him. Desperate efforts to search the area, speak to neighbors, and follow possible leads yielded nothing. Only on Friday, 4 July 2025, was a formal missing person case opened at SAPS Bethelsdorp.
Now, the case has been handed to the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) in Gqeberha, who are intensifying their search and pleading with the public for assistance.
“We are extremely concerned for Jaquin’s safety. He is just a child. Any small detail could help us bring him home,” said Warrant Officer Simphiwe Siyolo, who is leading the investigation.
The trauma has not only shaken Jaquin’s family but has also left the broader Booysens Park community gripped with fear and concern. Some residents say they’ve been afraid to let their children out to play since the incident.
