Mpumalanga police are investigating a chilling mystery after the bodies of a missing couple were discovered inside a car along the Longtom Pass Road between Sabie and Lydenburg on Monday evening, 25 August 2025.
The couple, who had been reported missing on Saturday, 23 August, were found lifeless inside a red sedan. Their disappearance had left family and friends deeply concerned, and the discovery has now raised more questions than answers.

According to police, the exact circumstances surrounding the couple’s deaths remain unclear. A postmortem and forensic tests will be carried out to determine the cause of death. “The victims have not yet been formally identified by their families, but investigations are underway,” authorities confirmed.
While the Sabie discovery stunned the community, another case surfaced just 40 kilometres away in Pilgrim’s Rest. On the same day, residents came across the decomposed remains of a man near a Toyota Double Cab bakkie at Morgenson Pass. The body was found between the back of the vehicle and a tree.

Both discoveries have left residents of Sabie, Lydenburg, and Pilgrim’s Rest shaken, as investigators work to establish whether the cases are connected or coincidental. The Mpumalanga SAPS Diving Unit and the K9 Search and Rescue team were called in to assist in recovering the bodies.
For now, three families are waiting for answers, while communities across the province watch closely as police piece together the events behind these unsettling deaths.
