A family’s plea for answers as police and community rally together
The community of Koster is gripped with worry after the disappearance of 27-year-old Otshepeng Mosweunyana, who was last seen at his family home in Reagile on the morning of Monday, 30 June 2025.
According to his father, Otshepeng was at home that morning and appeared calm. By 10:00, he had been seen for the last time. Just two hours later, at around noon, his belongings — including a black Machangane (Tsonga) bag — were discovered abandoned outside a dentist’s surgery in Reagile. Since then, there has been no trace of him.

Family left in anguish
Speaking to Missing Persons South Africa, Otshepeng’s father described the past weeks as “a nightmare that doesn’t end.”
“We are broken, we don’t sleep. Every knock at the door, every phone call, we hope it’s him. We just want our son to come home safe,” he said with visible pain.
The family has appealed to the public not only for information but also for prayers and solidarity during this difficult time.

“We urge anyone who may have seen Otshepeng or who knows anything, no matter how small it may seem, to come forward. Your information could be what helps bring him back home,” Thobokwe said.

The bigger picture: missing persons in South Africa
Otshepeng’s disappearance is a painful reminder of how common missing person cases are across the country. According to police statistics, tens of thousands of people are reported missing in South Africa each year, though many are later found. Families, however, often endure weeks or months of anguish while waiting for answers.
Why do some people vanish without a trace? What role can communities play in ensuring swift and safe returns? These are questions that continue to haunt affected families and challenge law enforcement.
Community urged to come together
Neighbours and friends in Reagile have joined the search, putting up posters and spreading the word on social media. “We cannot stand by while a young man from our community is missing,” one resident shared. “If we unite, we can bring him home.”
