Johannesburg, South Africa – The Witwatersrand Taxi Association (WATA) and the wider community are in mourning following the death of 37-year-old taxi driver Lebohang Monama, whose body was discovered near an abandoned mine in Randfontein, Gauteng, on Wednesday, 20 August 2025.
Monama, a long-serving driver for WATA, was reported missing on Thursday, 14 August, after failing to return home from work. He had been driving his white Toyota Quantum (registration 010 SEK GP) in Soweto when concerns arose that he could not be reached by phone. Family members immediately began searching for him, fearing the worst.
The following day, Monama’s vehicle was found burnt beyond recognition in Slovoville, apparently stripped of valuable parts before being torched. Despite this grim discovery, Monama himself was nowhere to be found, leaving loved ones and colleagues in anguish.
Nearly a week later, the tragic reality was revealed. Monama’s decomposing body was discovered near a dumping site in Randfontein. Authorities confirmed he had been killed by a single gunshot wound to the back of his head, suggesting an execution-style killing.

WATA spokesman Hamilton Miya described Monama’s death as a devastating blow to the association and the taxi industry at large.
“Our hearts are broken. Not only was he killed, but his taxi was also torched. This is very painful,” Miya said. “Lebohang’s death is not just a family tragedy but a loss for everyone in the taxi community.”
The South African taxi industry has long faced dangers ranging from route disputes to targeted attacks. Monama’s murder highlights the continued risks faced by drivers, many of whom transport thousands of commuters daily under often precarious conditions.
Monama’s family, from Emndeni, expressed deep sorrow at the loss of their loved one. Speaking on behalf of the family, Mbali Gwebu said:
“We are deeply heartbroken by what has happened to Lebohang. He was a cheerful person who was always laughing. Every day without him feels unbearable.”

Monama leaves behind family, friends, and colleagues whose lives have been forever changed. WATA has pledged support to the Monama family and called for justice to be served.
This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of both the personal toll and broader safety challenges faced by South African taxi operators, highlighting the urgent need for measures to protect those who play a vital role in keeping communities moving every day.
