BHOL0, EASTERN CAPE — Panic is gripping the small village of Heckel in Bholo, outside Stutterheim, as the mysterious disappearance of 61-year-old Sithembele Sonqishe enters its third week without a single lead.
The elderly man, described as mentally disturbed but not aggressive, vanished into thin air on the evening of Saturday, 29 June 2025, leaving behind a heartbroken family and a community desperate for answers.
According to police, Sithembele was last seen around 19:00 walking in Heckel Village, just a short distance from his home. But eerily, he never made it back. Despite frantic searches by locals and police, he has not been seen or heard from since.
“It’s like he just disappeared off the face of the earth. We’ve searched everywhere – the bushes, nearby villages, rivers – and nothing,” a distressed family member told our team.
Bholo SAPS, who are leading the investigation, have confirmed that preliminary inquiries and search efforts have yielded no clues as to Sithembele’s whereabouts.
Sithembele is described as:
- Light in complexion
- Bald head with a noticeable scar on his forehead
- Last seen wearing a green rain top, black beanie, and navy trousers

Police say that while he suffers from mental health issues, he is not considered dangerous. His disappearance, however, is now being treated with urgency.
“We are pleading with the community and anyone who may have information – even the smallest detail – to come forward. Every second counts,” said Detective Warrant Officer Siphokazi Peter, who is handling the case.
The circumstances around his disappearance have raised concerns, with many wondering whether foul play, disorientation, or even a tragic accident** may be involved.
As time ticks on, hope is beginning to fade – but his loved ones refuse to give up.
If you have any information, no matter how minor it may seem, please contact Detective Warrant Officer Siphokazi Peter of Bholo SAPS on 082 529 3600.
Let’s help bring Sithembele Sonqishe home. 🙏
