Protea Glen, Soweto – July 14, 2025
Shock, horror, and heartbreak have gripped residents of Protea Glen Extension 12 in Soweto, Gauteng, following a horrific discovery at a local illegal dumping site. The bodies of five newborn babies were found discarded in the open near Big Sky Hardware, prompting widespread outrage and fear within the community.
According to eyewitnesses, the grim discovery was made by local residents passing through the area on Sunday afternoon. The community members immediately contacted authorities, who cordoned off the site for forensic investigation.
“We are devastated. How can someone do this to newborn babies? These were innocent lives,” said one shaken resident, who asked to remain anonymous.
The site, which has long been used as an illegal dumping ground, has now become the center of a potential criminal investigation. Community speculation is rife that the tragic incident may be connected to illegal abortion practices allegedly operating underground in the area.

Suspicions of Illegal Abortions
While no suspects have been identified yet, community members have voiced their concerns about a growing trend of unregulated and unsafe abortions, especially among desperate or vulnerable young women who lack access to support services. The discovery of the newborn babies has reignited calls for the government and local NGOs to provide more accessible sexual health education, counselling, and support for pregnant women in distress.
“If someone knew of a safe place to go, maybe this would have never happened. We need more support systems in our communities,” said a local social worker.

Newborn Babies Viral Video Causes Outrage
A disturbing video from the scene, showing the small bodies of the newborn babies partially wrapped in plastic and dumped like trash, is circulating on community WhatsApp groups. Many have described the video as deeply traumatizing, urging others not to share it out of respect for the deceased.
Police Appeal for Information
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched an urgent investigation into the matter. Authorities are now appealing to the public for any information that could assist in identifying those responsible for the newborn babies.
“We urge anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward. The circumstances surrounding this case are extremely serious and demand the community’s cooperation,” said SAPS spokesperson.
In an emotional appeal, police have encouraged families who may know of young women who were recently pregnant to check on their well-being and report any suspicious circumstances.
Residents have expressed anger and frustration that such a heinous crime could happen right in their neighborhood. Many are demanding that the dumping site be cleaned and permanently shut down, citing ongoing safety and hygiene concerns. Local ward councillors are expected to visit the area this week to address residents’ grievances.
Support for Women in Crisis
The tragedy has brought renewed focus on the urgent need for crisis intervention and emotional support services, especially for women facing unplanned pregnancies or abuse. Community leaders are calling for the establishment of mobile clinics, counselling centers, and anonymous reporting mechanisms to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Anyone with information is urged to contact SAPS Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
