Waldo Verwey Shooting in Springs Leaves Family and Community Heartbroken
SPRINGS, GAUTENG – An 11-year-old boy, Waldo Verwey, who captured many hearts after being critically injured during a house robbery in Casseldale, Springs, has died from his wounds.
The incident took place on 2 October 2025, when armed robbers entered the family’s home. Waldo was shot in the head and treated at the scene before being airlifted to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, where he remained on life support for several days.
His foster mother, Christenette Barnard, shared a moving tribute that reflected both love and unbearable loss.

“Your name has travelled where your feet never could. May all your chocolate dreams come true. May you be the chef you always wanted to be – in heaven,” wrote Barnard in a heartfelt message on social media.
She recalled his sense of humour, his aversion to bad smells while driving, his stubbornness about cutting his hair, and his compassion for animals. “You climbed trees to put a washcloth in a nest because the little birds were cold,” she remembered. “Most of all, I’ll miss when you came and asked, ‘Are you doing ok?’ – We’ll be ok.”
Police Continue Investigation Into Springs Shooting
News of Waldo’s death spread quickly through Springs and the surrounding areas, sparking grief and outrage. Residents gathered online and in prayer circles to support the family, many describing the tragedy as another painful reminder of South Africa’s rising tide of violent home invasions.
Police confirmed that no arrests have been made and investigations are continuing. A spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS) said detectives are following several leads. “We are working tirelessly to identify those responsible for this senseless act. Anyone with information is urged to contact their nearest police station.”

Family Confirms Waldo Verwey’s Death, Requests Privacy
In a statement released on Thursday, the family confirmed Waldo’s passing.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm that 11-year-old Waldo has gained his angel wings. The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported him during his fight – to the medical teams, emergency responders, community members, and all who offered prayers and compassion.”
The family has asked for privacy during this difficult time, adding that funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
