The family of 31-year-old Suraan Windvogel is waiting for DNA test results after authorities recovered the body of a woman believed to be the missing Athlone engineer in Kewtown, Cape Town.
Although relatives believe the remains belong to Windvogel after identifying clothing and jewellery found on the body, police say forensic testing is still required before her identity can be officially confirmed. The case has left her loved ones searching for answers while investigators continue to determine how she died.
Why Suraan Windvogel’s Family Is Waiting for DNA Results
The latest development in the case comes after a decomposed body was discovered on Cross Boulevard Street in Kewtown earlier this week. The remains were found concealed inside bags after community members reported a strong odour in the area.
According to a family member, the condition of the body made visual identification extremely difficult. Relatives were only able to recognise what they believed to be Windvogel through the clothing and bracelets found with the remains.
Because of the advanced state of decomposition, a close relative has now provided a DNA sample to forensic investigators. The results will determine whether the body is officially confirmed to be that of Suraan Windvogel.
Until those forensic tests are completed, authorities have not formally concluded the identification process.

What Is Known About Suraan Windvogel’s Disappearance
Windvogel, a qualified engineer from Bokmakerie in Athlone, had reportedly been living with bipolar disorder. According to relatives, she experienced periods of mental distress during which she would sometimes leave home unexpectedly.
Family members said these episodes had happened before, making her disappearance especially concerning but not entirely unusual at first. However, when she failed to return home, concern grew among those closest to her.
Relatives described the 31-year-old as someone with professional achievements whose life had been affected by ongoing mental health challenges. They have appealed for privacy while they await the outcome of the forensic investigation.
At this stage, authorities have not confirmed exactly when Windvogel died or how long the body had been at the location before it was discovered.

Police Investigation Into the Kewtown Discovery
The discovery of the body prompted police to open an inquest docket while investigators work to establish both the identity of the deceased and the cause of death.
Police have confirmed that a post-mortem examination will be conducted as part of the investigation. The forensic process is expected to help determine when the woman died and whether any circumstances require further criminal investigation.
While jewellery found on the body assisted investigators and relatives during the initial identification process, police have emphasised that DNA testing remains an important step before making an official confirmation.
Authorities have not announced any arrests, nor have they released information suggesting that foul play has been confirmed. The investigation remains ongoing.

Community Awaits Answers as Investigation Continues
The discovery has shocked residents of Kewtown and the wider Athlone community, many of whom knew Windvogel or followed reports about her disappearance.
Community members were reportedly alerted after noticing a persistent foul smell in the area, leading to the discovery that has since become the focus of an active police investigation.
For Windvogel’s family, the immediate priority is receiving the DNA results that will provide certainty after an emotionally difficult identification process.
Police have encouraged anyone who may have information relevant to the investigation to contact Athlone SAPS on 021 697 9238 or 021 697 9239.
As forensic examinations continue, investigators are expected to provide further updates once the identity of the deceased has been formally confirmed and the post-mortem findings become available. Readers can follow our coverage for the latest developments as the investigation progresses.
