What began as a normal school day ended in terror for the family of Kamogelo Baukudi, a 19-year-old Grade 11 learner from Martie du Plessis Special Needs School in Fichardtpark, Bloemfontein.

At approximately 11:55 AM on 5 June 2025, Kamogelo was allegedly kidnapped by two men impersonating police officers, sending shockwaves across the country and reigniting concerns over the rising trend of police impersonation crimes in South Africa.

“They Said It Was a Drug Investigation… Then He Was Gone”

According to the official police report and eyewitness testimony from the driver, who wishes to remain anonymous, the two had just left school in a Suzuki Ertiga when a white Toyota Hilux GD-6 Double Cab with blue lights pulled them over along Vereeniging Drive in Erlichpark Extension.

“One of them wore a police uniform, the other was in a blue tracksuit. The one in uniform claimed our vehicle was involved in drug deliveries,” the driver said.

The driver was then told to lead the way to the Park Road Police Station, with the suspects following behind, allegedly transporting Kamogelo. But a truck entered the road and separated the vehicles, and in that moment, the Toyota Hilux vanished, taking Kamogelo with it.

A Nation on Edge: Police Impersonators Exploiting Trust

The terrifying incident highlights a broader, deeply troubling trend. Kidnappings in South Africa have been escalating at an alarming rate, with over 10,000 reported cases in the past year alone, according to SAPS crime stats.

“Impersonating officers is one of the most dangerous trends we are currently dealing with. These criminals exploit the public’s trust in law enforcement to commit serious crimes,” said Captain Sabata Jafta Moseme, the lead investigator on the case.

Anxious Family and Community Desperate for Answers

Kamogelo’s loved ones are devastated. A close family member who asked not to be named shared the heartache:

“Kamogelo is a humble, quiet boy. He didn’t deserve this. We are begging anyone—please help us bring him home.”

Community members in Fichardtpark have since joined hands with search task teams, handing out flyers and combing the area where he was last seen.
