According to Lunga’s family, he was at home on 5 July when he told them he was going out and would return. He then left the house and did not come back.

The family says they did not immediately become suspicious because Zikalala sometimes leaves home in this way. He would regularly go to a nearby spaza shop known as Ko My Friend to buy cigarettes.

Lunga Zikalala does not have a cellphone, meaning his family has no way of contacting him directly. Since his disappearance, nobody has contacted the family with information about where he might be.

His relatives say Lunga is a very private person and generally does not explain where he has been when he returns after disappearing. They also say that asking him too many questions can sometimes make him aggressive.

This is not the first time Lunga has gone missing. His family says he has disappeared on three previous occasions, making the current disappearance his fourth.

On one previous occasion last year, the family found him at Carltonville Hospital after a social media appeal helped bring attention to his disappearance.

The family says Lunga did not explain where he had been or what had happened to him after returning home.

With no information about his current whereabouts, the family has been checking places where he could potentially have been taken or sought assistance.

A missing person case was opened at Goniwe Police Station. The family says they were contacted by police on 26 August, although they are not completely certain of the date, and were advised to check at Germiston mortuary.

They went to Germiston mortuary on 28 August but did not find Lunga there. The family also checked at Tembisa Hospital, but he was not found there either.

The family says no community members have joined them in physical searches so far. Their efforts have mainly involved circulating posters and appeals on social media.

The family also says they have previously been targeted by scammers. According to the family, a person from Mpumalanga attempted to scam them during Lunga’s disappearance last year and they say a similar attempt has been made during the current search.

The family is urging people who receive information about Lunga to be cautious and to avoid sending money to anyone making unverified claims about his whereabouts.
