Harrismith Community Mourns as Missing Young Man is Found Dead
The search for 20-year-old Khulekani Bophelo from Tshiame B, near Harrismith, has ended in heartbreak after family members discovered his body on Saturday behind the Tshiame B mountains.
Bophelo had been missing since 25 September 2025, when he was last seen leaving his home wearing grey trousers, a black jacket, a black hat, and Adidas sneakers. Despite ongoing efforts by both the community and police to locate him, the search ended in sorrow.
Police have confirmed that there were no visible injuries on his body. An inquest docket has been opened to determine the exact cause of his death.

Timeline: From Disappearance to Discovery
On 25 September, Khulekani’s family realized he had not returned home and immediately began searching the surrounding areas. When they could not find him, the matter was reported to the Harrismith SAPS, prompting an official missing person alert to be issued by the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Captain Vusimusi Zwane of the Harrismith police, who handled the case, previously appealed to the public for assistance in locating the young man. “We appreciate every tip and effort made by residents,” Zwane said. “Our hearts go out to the family during this difficult time.”

Family Speaks of Heartbreak and Unanswered Questions
When news broke that Khulekani’s body had been found, his relative, who asked not to be named, said the family is “devastated and confused.”
“He was full of life and loved by everyone in the community,” she said tearfully. “We searched every day, hoping to bring him home alive. Finding him like this, with no answers, is something no parent should go through.”
Community members have since gathered at the family home to offer condolences and support. Neighbours described Khulekani as quiet, respectful, and often seen helping elders around the area.
Authorities Investigate the Cause of Death
Police confirmed that an inquest is underway to determine how Khulekani died. “At this stage, there are no visible injuries, but we will wait for the post-mortem results,” said Captain Zwane. “Investigations will continue until we can provide clarity to the family and community.”
