ROWALLAN PARK, GQEBERHA — What began as a quiet weekend visit has turned into a mystery.
John Rautenbach, a 49-year-old resident at a facility for intellectually challenged adults, was last seen on Sunday, 1 June 2025, while visiting a friend on Pollock Street in Rowallan Park.

By the early hours of Monday, 2 June, at around 01:00 AM, John had vanished, leaving behind questions, fear, and a community desperately hoping for answers.

A Sudden Disappearance Under Mysterious Circumstances

According to police and the friend he was staying with, motion detectors (beams) around the house were triggered shortly after midnight. Thinking it might be an animal, the alarm was ignored. But just minutes later, they realized John was no longer in the room—and he never came back.

“We checked every room, the yard, and the nearby streets. He was just… gone,” the friend said, visibly shaken. “We honestly thought he was asleep until we saw the bed was empty.”

SAPS Kabega Park detectives are actively investigating the case. At the time of his disappearance, John was wearing blue jeans, a black hoodie, and sneakers.

Who Is John Rautenbach?

John is described by his caregivers as gentle, soft-spoken, and trusting—someone who enjoys structure, routine, and safe spaces.

“He is one of our long-term residents,” said a staff member at the facility. “John functions well with guidance but can become confused if left on his own too long. This is completely out of character.”

His sudden disappearance has sent ripples of worry through the community.

Authorities and Family Plea for Help

SAPS spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu confirmed that a missing person report was filed immediately, and an active investigation is underway.

“We are following up on all leads and urge anyone who may have seen John or knows something, no matter how small, to contact SAPS Kabega Park at 082 302 6159,” she said.

The family, friends, and caregivers are devastated.

“We just want him home,” said a relative. “He’s vulnerable and could be scared or confused. Please help us bring him back.”

A Broader Issue: Missing Adults with Intellectual Disabilities

John’s case highlights a silent epidemic in South Africa and globally—vulnerable adults who go missing without the public attention often given to children.

According to Missing Children South Africa, as many as 25% of missing adult cases involve individuals with mental health or intellectual challenges.

These individuals may not fully understand how to ask for help or navigate unfamiliar places, making community awareness and vigilance even more crucial.
