A 60-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of 31-year-old engineer Suraan Windvogel after police made a breakthrough in the investigation into the discovery of her body in Kewtown, Athlone, in the Western Cape.
Police confirmed that the suspect was arrested on Friday, 26 June 2026, at about 9:30 pm and is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court once he has been formally charged. What Happened to Suraan Windvogel in Athlone?
Suraan Windvogel, a 31-year-old engineer from Bokmakierie in Athlone, was reported missing after leaving her home during what relatives described as a mental health episode.
According to family members, Suraan Windvogel had been living with bipolar disorder and had previously experienced periods during which she would leave home unexpectedly. They said she had no children and was well known to relatives and neighbours in the Athlone community.
Earlier this week, community members in Kewtown alerted authorities after noticing a strong odour coming from an area along Cross Boulevard Street. Police responded to the scene and discovered the body of a woman concealed inside refuse bags.
The discovery immediately prompted an investigation as officers worked to establish both the identity of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding her death.
While misinformation circulated on social media identifying the victim as someone else and giving an incorrect age, Windvogel’s relatives later confirmed that the deceased was indeed Suraan Windvogel, aged 31.
Although family members recognised clothing and distinctive bracelets found on the body, they have also provided DNA samples to assist forensic experts in formally confirming her identity because of the condition of the remains.

Police Confirm Arrest in the Suraan Windvogel Investigation
The investigation reached a significant milestone when police confirmed the arrest of a 60-year-old suspect.
Western Cape police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala said the man was arrested on Friday evening and is expected to appear before the Athlone Magistrate’s Court once formal charges have been finalised.
At this stage, police have not released further details regarding the relationship, if any, between the suspect and Windvogel. Authorities have also not disclosed the charges the suspect is expected to face, stating only that the court process will proceed once charging procedures have been completed.
The arrest follows several days of investigation after the body was discovered in Kewtown. Earlier in the week, police opened an inquest docket while forensic specialists examined the scene and arranged for a post-mortem examination.
Investigators are continuing to gather evidence as they work to establish the full circumstances surrounding Windvogel’s death. Police have not released additional information about the investigation, and authorities have urged the public to allow the legal process to continue.

Family Waits for DNA Confirmation After Emotional Identification
For Windvogel’s family, the investigation has been marked by several days of uncertainty before the arrest was announced.
A relative, who asked not to be identified, said family members were faced with the difficult task of attending the mortuary to determine whether the deceased was their loved one.
According to the relative, the family recognised Suraan Windvogel through the black clothing and bracelets found on the body. However, because visual identification alone could not provide complete certainty, a close family member submitted a DNA sample for forensic comparison.
The family expects the DNA process to provide official confirmation in the coming weeks.
Relatives also described Windvogel as a qualified engineer whose life changed after experiencing mental health challenges. They said she sometimes left home during periods of illness, making her disappearance especially distressing for those closest to her.
The family has asked for sensitivity as they continue to mourn while awaiting the final forensic results.
