Three suspects aged between 28 and 41 are expected to appear in the KuGompo Magistrate’s Court on 15 June 2026 after being arrested in connection with a kidnapping, armed robbery and housebreaking case in Phakamisa, Qonce, in the Eastern Cape.
The arrests followed a coordinated intelligence-driven operation by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit and Provincial Crime Intelligence. Authorities successfully rescued the victim unharmed and recovered evidence allegedly linked to the crime, marking a significant breakthrough in the fight against organised violent crime in the province.
What Happened During the Kidnapping in Phakamisa, Qonce
According to investigators, the incident took place on 12 June 2026 when a group of heavily armed suspects allegedly forced their way into the victim’s residence in Phakamisa after breaking down access points to the property.
Police said the suspects allegedly abducted the victim and seized his bank card before transporting him to an undisclosed location where he was unlawfully detained.
Authorities believe the victim was specifically targeted shortly after receiving a Road Accident Fund (RAF) payout. While the victim was being held captive, the suspects allegedly used his bank card to access and spend money from his account.
A criminal case was subsequently opened, prompting an immediate investigation by law enforcement agencies.
The case quickly drew the attention of specialised investigators due to the organised nature of the alleged crime and the possibility that the suspects had carefully planned the operation.

How Hawks Investigators Tracked the Suspects
Following the kidnapping report, investigators launched an intensive manhunt supported by intelligence gathering and coordinated operational efforts.
According to authorities, investigators worked to trace the movement of the suspects and monitor transactions linked to the victim’s bank card.
The investigation eventually led officers to Hemingway’s Mall in KuGompo City, where the suspects were allegedly observed conducting transactions using the victim’s bank card.
Preliminary investigations revealed that purchases worth approximately R21,650 had allegedly been made at various retail outlets using money from the victim’s account.
Law enforcement officials closely monitored the suspects before moving in to make arrests.
The intelligence-led operation demonstrated the importance of cooperation between specialised crime units and intelligence structures in responding to organised criminal activity.

Arrests Made at Hemingway’s Mall and Evidence Recovered
Operational teams acted swiftly after identifying the suspects at the shopping centre.
Police intercepted the three suspects as they allegedly exited one of the stores within Hemingway’s Mall.
Authorities said the victim’s bank card was recovered from the suspects. Investigators also recovered clothing believed to have been purchased using funds allegedly taken from the victim’s account.
The recovered items are expected to form part of the ongoing investigation and may be presented as evidence during future court proceedings.
At this stage, the suspects face charges relating to kidnapping, armed robbery, and housebreaking.
As with all criminal cases, the suspects remain innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
The arrests are being viewed as a significant success for law enforcement agencies working to combat organised violent crime in the Eastern Cape.
Victim Rescued Safely as Investigation Continues
One of the most significant outcomes of the operation was the successful rescue of the kidnapping victim.
Authorities confirmed that the victim was found unharmed and was safely reunited with his family following the arrests.
Police have indicated that investigations remain ongoing as they work to determine whether additional individuals may have been involved in the alleged criminal operation.
Investigators are also exploring the possibility of further arrests while seeking to dismantle what they believe could be a broader criminal network connected to the incident.
The suspects were expected to make their first court appearance in the KuGompo Magistrate’s Court on 15 June 2026, where the charges against them are expected to be formally presented.
Law enforcement officials have reiterated their commitment to tackling organised crime and protecting communities from violent criminal activities. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses and court proceedings continue.
