A Quiet Morning Turns Into a Family’s Worst Fear
What began as a hopeful job search quickly turned into a nightmare for one Orange Farm family.
Gugulethu Mkhwanazi, 36, left her home in Orange Farm on the early morning of Tuesday, 25 June 2025, around 6:00 AM, intending to travel to Johannesburg in search of employment.
Since then, she hasn’t been seen or heard from.
Her friend Lerato, who contacted Missing Person South Africa, says the family is living in agony, holding onto hope with every passing hour. “We’re all worried sick. She’s never gone this long without contact,” she said.

“She Left Early and Never Came Back”
According to the family, no one saw what Gugulethu was wearing when she left, as she departed while everyone was still asleep.
She took her phone—a STAY Fal v A05s—but by the time her family tried to reach her, the calls were going straight to voicemail.
“We also spoke to her boyfriend,” said Lerato. “He said they spoke briefly that morning, but she never arrived at his place, and he hasn’t been able to reach her since.”
Now, with no leads and growing anxiety, her family is pleading with the public for any information.

A Broader Crisis in South Africa
Gugulethu’s story is one of many. According to Missing Children South Africa, an alarming every five hours, someone—child or adult—goes missing.
Women looking for work are especially vulnerable. In areas like Johannesburg, where opportunities are scarce and dangers high, a job hunt can tragically turn into a missing person case.
Cases like Gugulethu’s remind us of the fragile balance between hope and harm, and the urgency to act quickly when someone disappears.
What We Can Learn From This Tragedy
This situation is a wake-up call for many of us. Let’s reflect on how we can better protect ourselves and our loved ones:
- ✅ Always inform someone of your destination and expected return
- ✅ Avoid traveling alone, especially at odd hours
- ✅ Keep your phone fully charged and share your live location with trusted contacts
- ✅ Check in regularly when travelling for work or interviews
- ✅ Save emergency contacts in an easily accessible place
Simple actions can save lives. We must remain vigilant—not just for ourselves, but for others too.
